The Road Worrier’s take
2009 July 12

Bruce Siceloff presents his view on his blog post here.
Now or in the future….do YOU agree that we should just keep facilitating more and more “through traffic,” through our community? Or would you rather see our state and the DOT focus on other solutions?
Read and comment below. You can also email Bruce and inform him of some of the concerns about the development. And don’t forget, please come to the meeting on Thursday, July 16, 6-9 pm, Green Hope High School.
don’t miss the individual posts and comments (they are in two separate sections–look for them) in response to Bruce’s article. There are some interesting opinions in there!
Our company owns and operates several convenience stores in North Carolina. We have one particular store that is located in Wilmington on Carolina Beach Road that has been negatively impacted by the new road design on Carolina Beach Road. This is the same road design that DOT is proposing for Highway 64 in Cary. It is my opinion that the express design will cause major inconveniences for residents and businesses in Cary. There has to be a better alternative than the one that DOT is proposing.
go see the super street in Omaha NE … dodge street west of 120th. If you are going beyond it, it is absolutely wonderful. If you are traveling to a location within it, an absolute nightmare. About 40% bankrupcies for the businesses impacted.
I am totally supportive of the DOT plans. The current stretch of Hwy. 64 is dangerous due to thousands of cars stopping and going between Apex and hwy. 1. Accidents are numerous. I actually never stop at the businesses along the route because it is too frustrating to get back into the heavy traffic on the highway. If traffic moved more freely, perhaps I would stop for gas or go grocery shopping. This is an example of NIMBY!
CO, thanks for your feedback in support of the DOT’s plans. One question for you…what if there could be a bypass around existing US64? Simply by using existing US1 South to Sanford, to the pending NC540 spur, to US 64…DOT could create a way for drivers like yourself to bypass completely all the local traffic and community centers (like the high school, the library, and retail areas). You’d have much less frustration if you could bypass all that, right? Do you think you would use such a bypass?
I don’t think that most Apex residents want more through traffic. I know that I don’t. If NC DOT feels the need to spend money on Apex, I’d like to see them take care of existing roadways that they are responsible for.
I have mixed emotions about the new change. There needs to be one and it does carry a lot of traffic at certians times. This will only increase in the years to come. So why federal dollars may be avaliable why nottake advantage of them. So the ones no in support of the change what would be a good option. Please Post them.

DOT will do whatever it takes to come up with new projects- it keeps em’ in bidness. They will stop at nothing to get what they want. I know this first hand. Do you really think that they care about displacing people or businesses? HA! The worst part is that the people who move here don’t know (or care) what they have already done to us natives. The toll road is just more of the same. Another slap in the face. This will be another slap in the face. If you care what happens then you need to keep a real sharp eye on the DOT.
Growth is good! Support highway 64 expansion!!!
If you all continue this strategy of fighting growth, you will end up with a mess exactly like Capital Blvd. There are two undeniable truths: Growth is coming, and the car isn’t going anywhere. If we want a better future, we better handle opportunities like 64 proactively or we will waste another nice area of Wake Co..
thanks for all the feedback, everyone. We appreciate hearing all of your viewpoints.
Two things to note…
1) we do not “screen” or edit posts on this blog. We post everything that is written to us that deals with the DOT’s plans (in its original and unedited form) unless it is profane, obscene, or slanderous. We particularly appreciate constructive views on both sides of the issue.
2) Save64.org is not against growth. We want to see our area developed in a planful manner that keeps us all safe, mobile and well-positioned for the future. At present, Save64.org does not have an official “stand” on the solution for this area, except this: whatever solution the DOT adopts for this area, it must work for the Apex/Cary community as well as for the region and the state. We are indeed proactively engaging the DOT in dialogue to find the solution that works for us all.
Again , thanks again for the feedback and keep checking back for more information.
Having grown up along this corridor and watching it grow over the past 30 years I feel this plan is essential. I can remember getting from 1/64 to Jordan Lake in 13-14 minutes. As Cary and Apex expand and stoplights are added this trip is now taking in the neighborhood of 20-25 minutes. As the region grows you can expect more commuter traffic and Tractor-Trailers on US-64 and if you don’t prepare to accommodate for it you will end up with a Capital Blvd. in Cary/Apex. Remember that Charlotte and Greensboro are going through the same growth and warehousing and distribution centers are getting pushed farther and farther out. Soon Asheboro will be a sort of connection point for these regions and a lot of distribution centers will be placed there to funnel product to all three regions in a 1 hour drive. As this occurs US-64 traffic will quadruple.
Cary has model of community planning which is respected worldwide and this planning shouldn’t stop now. If we ignore the problem and let growth continue without infrastructure improvements US 64 will have the look and feel of a New Jersey highway with barricades down the middle and endless shopping centers on either side with daily gridlock. Growth is good when you plan appropriately!
