Making improvements to US 64 is not necessarily a bad idea. Also, because of how long it takes for NCDOT to complete projects, by starting the planning now, when the need has grown, at least the planning studies will have been completed. Even now, US 64 can be a slow and tedious trip due to the stop lights and the traffic. As SW Wake continues to grow…with subdivisions and retail/commercial development, traffic will continue to grow. 540 will help RTP commuters but what relief will commuters and to Raleigh and local drivers get. US 64 will eventually become SW Wake’s Capital Boulevard. A clogged facility carrying a mix of through and local traffic with tons of driveways and stoplights. Traffic will crawl during the morning rush…the mid-day rush…and the evening rush. By controlling access and upgrading US 64, the community will get more bang for its buck than just adding lanes.

I agree. I lived up in Wake Forest before moving to Apex and Capital Boulevard was/is a nightmare. It is a prime example of what happens when one doesn’t plan for the growth. As the area gets more developed (which it will), then my 15 minute commute turns into 25 minutes, then into 35 minutes, then I end up driving 5 miles out of my way to try to avoid the traffic. 540 might help somewhat, but I think it will help out 55 more than 64 since through that area it will be going north and south not east and west. If you don’t like this plan, what do you suggest for an alternate. I don’t think 540 will help the majority of the traffic. It won’t help me as I need to go to where 1/64 meets. I would be more inclined to support this petition if there was a viable alternative proposed. I think doing nothing will cause a major traffic problem that will be harder/more expensive to fix after it becomes the problem.
