Thank you for a great meeting

Thank you to everyone who attended the DOT’s community meeting last night. Approximately 250 attendees came out to hear the DOT’s presentation on the US64 Study, and many people presented their questions and concerns to the DOT’s 5-person panel. We sincerely appreciate the DOT hosting this additional informational session.

NOTE: the DOT is accepting feedback from the public through July 31. Please visit http://www.ncdot.org/doh/PRECONSTRUCT/tpb/SHC/studies/us64/public/ to submit your questions or comments.

We’d also like to thank our elected officials for attending and commenting. Your leadership on this issue means a great deal to your communities, and we look forward to your continued involvement.

And kudos to all the folks that presented their own questions and individual concerns to the DOT’s panel! Without direct comments from citizens like you, Save64.org can’t do its work. Matter of fact, we’d love to have your help…let us know how you’d like to volunteer! Just write privately to workon64@aol.com to let us know what you can do for your neighborhood, church, or business.

Thanks again for coming out in the middle of summer, and watch this space for more information on the path forward.

The Road Worrier’s take

Bruce Siceloff presents his view on his blog post here.

Now or in the future….do YOU agree that we should just keep facilitating more and more “through traffic,” through our community? Or would you rather see our state and the DOT focus on other solutions?

Read and comment below. You can also email Bruce and inform him of some of the concerns about the development. And don’t forget, please come to the meeting on Thursday, July 16, 6-9 pm, Green Hope High School.

Questions about the Superstreet? Read this!

Check out this link to an article that covers the new superstreet in Leland, NC (outside Wilmington)…it offers insights to the pros and cons of the “new-to-NC” style of road known as “the superstreet.”

http://www.thenbm.com/michigan.html

Here’s a quote from the above article:
“As it’s planned now, developers will also pay for all future superstreet intersections—which will run all along Highway 17. Peoples says the new intersections will increase the corridor’s traffic capacity by 50 to 60 percent.”

Want to see for yourself what could increase our traffic by 50-60 percent locally? You can drive a superstreet in person, without going all the way to Wilmington…there’s a small signalized superstreet at 15-501 and Europa Drive in Chapel Hill.

Even closer to home, you can also see an example of a right-in/right-out intersection, which is the hallmark of superstreets, at Kelly Road and US 64.

If you can, go drive these intersections…and decide if it’s what you’d like to see in your community.

Top 10 List

For the upcoming NC DOT meeting on July 16 at Green Hope High School (6-9 pm), Save64 needs to know your top ten concerns for both the superstreet and the expressway proposals. So far, the DOT is aware of two major community concerns:

* use of US 1 South/NC 540 as a bypass
* Pedestrian crossing at Laura Duncan

Please comment below to register any/all of your concerns. We will review the comments and submit them to the DOT for inclusion in the July 16th meeting.

Also, we are preparing to send an email to everyone who signed the petition or registered for the mailing list. Look for it soon, and keep checking this website for more info as July 16 approaches.

Below is a summary of a request from David Wasserman of the NC DOT, sent to Save64.org, regarding the July 16 meeting:

We are currently preparing for the July 16th Community Meeting and I wanted to let you know of the format and also ask for your input. The meeting will begin at 6:30 with a welcome and introduction, followed by a two part presentation. The first part will be a (slide show presentation outlining the current state of the US64 project). The second part of the presentation will focus on the top ten most common concerns/questions. To help make the meeting more informative and better for everyone, I’d like to ask each of you what are the other top concerns we should address in the presentation?

Of course, there will be opportunity to discuss other concerns that are not included in the presentation. After we discuss the top ten, participants will have an opportunity to ask questions to a panel of Study Team members for the remainder of the evening (until a few minutes before 9:00).

If you could provide your top concerns/questions to me by Wednesday, July 8th, that would be greatly appreciated.

by workon64

Dear Mr. Wasserman,

We saw your statement on the news yesterday, and we think you’re missing our point.

Save64.org is standing up for citizens, taxpayers and voters who don’t want the superstreet/expressway in Apex and Cary.

Funding or no funding, study or no study, tomorrow or in thirty years…

….we don’t want it here. Not now, not ever.

Respectfully,
Save64.org
