Dave, this lane addition is something that folks around here would like to be aware of, I'd think. Would you be willing to post this again, in response to the top article on the blog, that went up this morning?

Also, if you have any info on how the Town of Cary has to interact with DOT on this project, I'm sure folks would like to hear it.

Thanks, workon64

At the October 22 workshop on Rte 64, we were informed that a plan exists to add/extend the left turn lane between Edinburgh and Gregson. Please see the email from the Cary town traffic planning dept.

"Town Staff is currently working on design drawings for the lane addition.
The requirement from the Traffic Analysis Report is to provide an additional east bound lane to the inside of US 64 from Edinburgh Drive towards Gregson.
A taper of approximately 720' is to start at Gregson Drive to the full lane addition towards Edinburgh.
Basically, this project extends the US 1 North bound turn lane from its current location near the bridge, and moves it back to start at Gregson.
Tentatively, the project is scheduled to start construction in Spring 2011. "

At the Rte 64 workshop, one of the key points that was stressed by the neighborhood community was that Rte 64 should keep the "boulevard" appearance and not become another Capital Boulevard. I personally feel that this extension of the left turn lane will be a step in the wrong direction. I believe it is an unecessary project, I believe it will replace grass median with asphalt, and therefore erode the boulevard appearance of Rte 64.

I plan to write an email of protest/complaint to the Cary Traffic Engineering department. If you feel the same way, please write to Laura L. Cove (Traffic Engineering Manager) at laura.cove@townofcary.org and to Eric W. Simpson (Engineer) at eric.simpson@townofcary.org.
